Call for Kentucky Board of Massage Therapy Members & KY HB 346

The Kentucky Board of Licensure for Massage Therapy is seeking applicants to serve on the board. There are currently three vacancies for licensed massage therapists (LMTs),  one of which may be a school owner.

The board consists of seven members—five must be LMTs (at least one but no more than two of those can also be owners or directors of a board-approved school). Candidates must be residents of Kentucky for at least one year and have been practicing massage therapy for at least five of the last seven years. Each board term is three years in length.

Kentucky Governor Signs Bill to Amend Massage Therapy Licensing Law

A bill amending the massage therapy practice act was signed into law by Governor Beshear on April 12, 2010. The law provides for technical changes to the current law, including :
  • The law adds language allowing the board to accept other entry-level exams, such as the Massage and Bodywork Licensing Exam (MBLEx) offered by the Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards (FSMTB). The MBLEx is currently accepted in 26 states with additional states working (as Kentucky did by amending the law) toward accepting it.

Kentucky Considers Amending Massage Therapy Practice Act

For the last two years, the Kentucky Board of Licensure for Massage Therapy and a few representatives from both ABMP and the AMTA-Kentucky Chapter have been discussing changes to the Massage Therapy Practice Act. House Bill 180, sponsored by Representative Ruth Ann Palumbo, is the result of those discussions. If passed, HB 180 would make a few small changes to the existing law:
  • An exemption for instructors who are residents of another state who are in Kentucky to teach short term would be clarified.

Kentucky Massage Therapy Board Seeks Members One important way to become more engaged in your profession is to apply for an appointment to the massage therapy board. Five massage therapists and two public members are appointed to the Kentucky Board of Licensure for Massage Therapy for three-year terms; there are currently two open positions for professional massage therapists. ABMP encourages all independent massage therapists to apply for these open appointments. It is advantageous for a board to represent the diversity in the profession and hear different viewpoints.

Kentucky

The Kentucky Board of Licensure for Massage Therapy is appointing an ad hoc committee to make recommendations regarding changes to the existing massage therapy licensing law. A survey was sent to all ABMP members who have an email address on file to gauge their opinions so that we may represent our Kentucky membership on this committee. If you have any comments, please contact Jean Robinson, Government Relations Director, at jean@abmp.com.
