The Skinny on Skin (Cancer)

Massage therapists are invaluable to clients not only for their manual skills, but for their keen eyes on clients’ skin abnormalities. Skin cancers of the head and neck—melanomas—are the most serious types of skin cancers and oftentimes the most difficult for someone to self-detect.

For those who want to become more informed about spotting potential melanomas, Skinny on Skin has an online course available for free at www.skinnyonskin.org. The course takes about 45 minutes and participants receive a certificate on completion.

The material helps practitioners identify suspicious lesions and includes guidance about how to stay within scope of practice, including how to talk to clients and refer them to a dermatologist for a potential diagnosis.

For more information, resources, and the free online course, visit www.skinnyonskin.org.
