Although the Michigan massage therapy licensing law went into effect in 2014, the rules regarding continuing education (CE) have not been issued by the Michigan Board of Massage Therapy yet. The process of drafting and approving the rules is ongoing, and we can't give you a firm statement as to when the Board will issue the rules or what specifically the rules will say once they're final.
What we do know is that licensed massage therapists will not be required to start obtaining any CE hours until - at the very earliest - the renewal year of 2018. In other words, if you are required to renew in 2018, you would need to complete your CE's by 2021. If you are required to renew in 2019, you would need to complete your CE's by 2022, and so on. Since the rules aren't in place yet, we don't know if there will be a "carryover" provision, meaning whether CE hours earned in 2018 could be used for someone renewing in 2022. There are a lot of details still to be worked out and finalized in the rules, including the number of hours required, types of courses that will count toward CE, approved providers, and many other important details.
There is nothing you need to do now. No one needs to obtain CE hours right now. We simply wanted to give you an update on where the process stands, and provide a heads up as to the timeframe.
