New York Bill Includes Massage Therapy as Opioid Pain Management Alternative

On December 23, 2022, New York Governor Kathy Hochul signed into law Assembly Bill 273 (A 273), which addresses patient treatment plans for those seeking pain management from neuromusculoskeletal conditions. A 273 includes massage therapy on the list of non-opioid treatment alternatives. The bill went into effect December 23, 2022.

A 273 requires medical practitioners to consider, discuss, and refer or prescribe non-opioid treatments before starting opioid treatment. The non-opioid treatments identify massage therapy among several alternative treatments to consider.
