Massage therapists work intimately with our clients, and it’s our responsibility to stay up to speed on information about risks presented to ourselves and to our clients by contagious diseases. This course covers a carefully chosen selection of contagious diseases that are especially relevant for massage therapists. Begin with a review of immune system function, and then learn the definitions, demographics, pathophysiology, signs and symptoms, treatment options, and role of massage therapy for herpes simplex, herpes zoster, and bacterial infections of the skin (including MRSA).

Protect Your Practice: Public Health and Contagious Diseases–Part 2

1.5 CE hours

Protect your practice by staying informed about the risks presented to you and your clients by contagious diseases. Learn the definitions, demographics, pathophysiology, signs and symptoms, treatment options, and role of massage therapy for contagious diseases that are especially relevant to massage therapists, including HIV/AIDS; hepatitis A, B, and C; and respiratory infections including colds, influenza, and COVID-19.

These courses are available in the ABMP Education Center to view and earn CE hours.

Instructor Bio

Ruth Werner is an award-winning educator, writer, and retired massage therapist with a passionate interest in massage therapy research and the role of bodywork for people who live with health challenges. Her groundbreaking textbook, A Massage Therapist’s Guide to Pathology is now in its 7th edition and is published by Books of Discovery.
