TN Bill Exempts Temporary License Holders from Competency Exam

On April 8, 2022, Governor Lee signed into law Senate Bill 1943 (SB 1943), which allows the Board of Massage Licensure (Board) to grant a temporary license to a person in good standing who is either licensed, registered, or certified in another state without passing a competency exam by the Board. SB 1943 is effective July 1, 2022.

Essentially, SB 1943 allows individuals to work with a temporary license without passing a competency exam while applying for licensure through reciprocity. A person with a temporary license must work under the supervision of a licensed professional. A temporary license will expire six months after being issued. Within this timeframe, a person with a temporary license must complete a competency exam approved by the Board to obtain a full license.

A person with a temporary license can apply for a six-month extension if:

  1. They have been unable to take a competency exam within the initial temporary license period
  2. They are registered to take an upcoming competency exam
  3. They are still waiting for results of the competency exam
