Iowa Bill Now Requires Massage Therapists to Complete Child and Dependent Adult Abuse Training

On May 23, 2022, Governor Reynolds signed into law House File 2168 (HF 2168), which adds massage therapists to the list of persons required to report child and dependent adult abuse. Massage therapists will now be required to complete training on this subject, and it is a condition of licensure. The bill will go into effect July 1, 2022.

HF 2168 allows massage therapists to include each hour of child and dependent adult abuse mandatory reporter training toward their annual continuing education requirements. These courses are developed by the Iowa Department of Human Services and can be accessed on their website at https://dhs.iowa.gov/child-welfare/mandatoryreporter.

A massage therapist who knowingly fails to report child and dependent adult abuse will be found guilty of a simple misdemeanor, punishable by confinement for no more than 30 days and a fine of at least $105 but no more than $855.

Effective: July 1, 2022.
