Ohio Modifies Scope of Practice

The Ohio State Medical Board recently redefined the scope of practice for massage therapists.

The scope of practice now allows for the application of ultrasound, diathermy, electrical neuromuscular stimulation, or similar modalities upon referral from a physician, physician assistant, chiropractor, or advanced practice registered nurse. Massage therapists should note that on-site supervision from the referring practitioner may be required if the FDA classifies a device used to perform a service as a prescription. Supervision is not needed if the device is classified by the FDA as "over-the-counter."

The Board also amended license verification for those who do not have a primary practice location. These massage therapists may now offer proof of licensure directly from the Board's website upon client request, or continue to carry with them their physical license as per previous requirements.
