Texas Massage Regulation to be Transferred to Department of Licensing and Regulation in 2017

Under Texas SB 202, which became law in 2015, regulatory oversight of the Texas massage therapy program will be transferred from the Department of State Health Services (DSHS) to the Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) in late 2017. Several other professional regulation programs are making the transition as well and we anticipate that TDLR will have the required systems in place prior to the transfer of the massage program.



California Bill Would Exempt Bowenwork from Local Massage Business Regulation

Under California law, cities and counties can enact local ordinances providing for the regulation of massage businesses. California AB 2793, introduced this legislative session, proposes that Bowenwork be specifically exempted from this provision. Thus, under the bill, a city or county could not require a Bowenwork to get a city or county massage business license (as distinguished from a general business license required of all types of busines


SD HB 1027 Signed Into Law

South Dakota HB 1027, discussed in our previous legislative update, has been signed into law. Again, one of the primary changes made by this new law is a tightening of the rules for licensure by endorsement, in that out-of-state licensees applying for a SD license now must show specifically that they have 500 hours of massage education or have practiced massage for the past two years. This provision succeeded despite ABMP’s oppo
