Exploring Healing Soundscapes

“Divine sound is the cause of all manifestations. The knower of the mystery of sound knows the mystery of the whole universe.”

—Hazrat Inayat Khan

Sound therapy is making waves in the wellness world. Humans have used the healing properties of sound for thousands of years, and it has a history of bringing people together, fostering unity and community.

The essence of sound healing work is based on the principle that everything in the universe vibrates at frequencies, including ourselves. When we feel pain, tension, or stress or experience an illness, our body’s frequencies are often out of harmony. Studies demonstrate that sound can affect how we think and feel by impacting brain-wave patterns, promoting states of deep relaxation, and healing.1

We can replenish and feed ourselves in that community of connection with gong meditations, group Kirtan (chanting), sound baths, and by booking sessions with sound healers harnessing tuning forks, singing bowls, drums, rattles, and chimes.

Sound Basking

Sound healing is as easy to incorporate into your self-care practice as grooving to a favorite playlist or singing a favorite song. Use receptive or engaged listening to create a more formal self-healing practice.

Receptive Listening

Different hertz (Hz) frequencies are believed to have specific effects at the cellular level, activating the body’s ability to heal itself.2 Try one of the following frequencies:

  • 174 Hz to reduce physical and emotional tension

  • 432 Hz for deep relaxation and sleep

  • 832 Hz to induce mental clarity, relaxation, and spiritual connection

Engaged Listening

Get engaged by integrating and matching your breath to sound.

  • Breathe in and strike a sound like a tuning fork, singing bowl, or drum.

  • Exhale and allow for the sound to dissipate.

  • Repeat several times until you feel a shift in your body, mind, or mood.

In Short

Sound is a simple tool that can be used as a vibrational healing salve to calm, focus, amplify self-healing, and affirm your connection to the universe.
