The Alliance for Massage Therapy Education (AFMTE) has released a draft of its Assessments Table for Standard One of the Core Competencies and is asking for public feedback through a brief 12-question survey.

As discussed in our previous update, Colorado House Bill 1320 was initiated this legislative session by the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA). The intention of the bill was to close loopholes in the current Massage Therapy Practice Act that are being exploited for illegal activity. The bill was sponsored by Representatives Foote and Carver, and Senator Cooke.

The National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork (NCBTMB) recently announced Guptha would leave the interim CEO position at NCBTMB and Kirin was asked to return as CEO as the Board continues to develop a long-term strategic plan.

ABMP members are now eligible for an exclusive member discount at the World Massage Conference, June 5–6, 2016. Registration, which is normally $199, is just $99 for ABMP members and also includes access to the fall event in November.

Reiki is now exempt from the massage license requirement in Utah if it is used as a “spiritual healing art” and does not involve the methods outlined in the Utah massage statute’s scope of practice for Massage Therapy. However, should a Reiki Practitioner while performing the “spiritual healing art” involve the use of any of the methods outlined in the scope of practice for Massage Therapy, then the Reiki Practitioner must be licensed as a Massage Therapist.
