The Entry-Level Analysis Project, with members of the ELAP Work Group

Initiated by conversations among the profession’s leadership early in 2011, the Entry-Level Analysis Project (ELAP) goals were to obtain and use research data and analysis of findings from other massage profession documents to inform the creation of an entry-level curriculum map. The map defines the essential elements of entry-level curriculum necessary for safe and competent practice in a massage career and predicts the total number of minimum hours needed to prepare graduates for entry into the massage profession. The project outputs are being used to inform the Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards’ Model Practice Act to promote portability of credentials in the massage profession. This session reports on the project findings, resources, and implications for massage professionals, schools, instructors, and students.

A Conversation with Ruth Werner, with Leslie Young

Ruth Werner is a retired massage therapist and lifelong educator with a passionate interest in the role of massage and bodywork for people who struggle with illness. The author of A Massage Therapist’s Guide to Pathology, and Disease Handbook for Massage Therapists, Werner also is a columnist for Massage & Bodywork magazine. She has served the Massage Therapy Foundation since 2007, first as a trustee and then as president. The Massage Therapy Foundation is a 501 (c) 3a public charity dedicated to advancing the knowledge and practice of massage therapy by supporting scientific research, education, and community service. In this behind-the-scenes session, Werner shares with Massage & Bodywork magazine Editor in Chief, Leslie Young, the evolution of her ideas, the questions that keep her curious, and the formative moments in her life and career.
