All Alaska Massage Therapy licenses must be renewed by September 30 of odd-numbered years. That means that you must renew your current massage license by September 30, 2017. License renewal applications will be available on the Board's website sometime after July 1, 2017. |

New CE Requirement
The rules governing continuing education (CE) for licensed massage therapists in Michigan have now been issued. This means that you must complete 18 hours of CE during the license renewal following your next (upcoming) renewal. No CE is required for your next renewal.

The Colorado Department of Regulation (DORA), Office of Massage Therapy Licensure will hold a Stakeholder Meeting on Wednesday, March 22, 2017, at 1:30 pm to discuss proposed Massage Therapy Rules 4, Rule 5 and Rule 13. Per the notice sent out by the state, "stakeholder input is crucial to achieving the Department's missions of consumer protection and effective licensure and enforcement, without unnecessary impediment to the economic market." We encourage you to attend the meeting if you're interested in the rulemaking process and would like to be heard.

An amendment was added to Senate Bill 9 in the Illinois Legislature last week which would impose a sales tax on massage therapy services. The bill includes a new list of taxable "personal care services," including massage, manicuring, tattooing, and tanning. However, "personal care services" are excluded from the tax if they are performed by, or under the order of, a licensed physician, physician's assistant, nurse, or a licensed chiropractor. Hair cutting, coloring, and styling are also exempt.

Delaware House Bill 35 has been introduced in the state legislature as a proposal to require massage establishment licensing in the state. If the bill passes in its current form, massage businesses would be required to hold a separate massage establishment license in addition to a general business license, and in addition to individual licensure for the therapists working in the business.

As we discussed in our last update, House Bill 1289 proposes to change the state's system of regulation of massage therapists from "title protection" certification to mandatory licensure.
