Boston Marathon Survivors and Injured Veterans Seek Massage Therapy Volunteers

Three years ago, the Boston Marathon bombings forever changed the lives of Heather Abbott, Celeste and Sydney Corcoran, Adrianne Haslet, Gillian Reny, Lee Ann Yanni, Michelle L'Heureux, Marc Fucarile, Brittany Loring, Elizabeth Bermingham, and hundreds of others. In the weeks that followed, Americans and people from around the world were quick to rally behind them, including a group of injured veterans from Semper Fi Fund who rushed to their bedsides in support. Last week, several of those survivors teamed up with the Semper Fi Fund to embark on the One World Strong Trek, a journey across the country, as a way of saying thank you to all of those who contributed to their recovery efforts.

Led by two runners who will trek the entire cross-country distance, supporters are invited to join as they make their way from coast to coast in relay fashion. Neither a race nor a timed event, their goal is simply to move and reach as many people as possible. The trek will stop in New York City, Philadelphia, Washington, DC, Chicago, Kansas City, Denver, San Francisco, and several smaller cities and towns along the route. Boston Marathon survivors and injured veterans from the Semper Fi Fund will come to share their stories and say thank you to EMS, police, fire, and medical personnel in Boston and across the country, along with each and every individual who has supported them these past three years.

I am the owner of The Boston Bodyworker. Located just steps past the finish line of the Boston Marathon, we were directly impacted by the events of April 15, 2013. In the weeks and months following these attacks, I forged lifelong friendships with some of the strongest and most amazing people I will ever know. Together, we helped these survivors reclaim our finish line by completing a cross-country, nonstop running relay of 3,328.2 miles. Together, we raised more than $500,000 for them to help them live their new normal. Now, they want to say thank you to the tens of thousands of people all across the country that sent money, letters, and prayers their way.

This journey is already underway and they need you to get them across this great country. I don’t need to explain to a massage therapist the benefit a “tune-up” will have on a runner averaging close to 30 miles a day. They have reached out to me to ask for my help in locating massage therapists along their route to provide them with some well-deserved support.

In addition to saying thanks to those who helped them, Dave Fortier, one of the organizers, says, “We want to share our stories and talk about how movement—everything from yoga to marathon training—has helped many of us move forward. We hope these stories inspire others to never give up, to keep moving, to continue to better their current situation while becoming the best version of themselves possible.”

As massage therapists, we understand the value of giving back. I promise you, there is an even greater value in giving back to those who gave without the luxury of choice.

If you would like to be a part of something great and help these runners as they come through a city near you, please reach out to me at drew@bostonbodyworker.com.

I cannot begin to tell you how much they will appreciate this support. For additional information, visit www.oneworldstrongtrek.com or Facebook.com/oneworldstrongtrek.
